Kelaska I believe you are right. Even those creatures which appear to have an unusually high level when you use /examine it tells you the correct level for that creature.

You could always keep the level on the database and rename it and add in a \"New Level\" field. Covered in my post here:

Yes Mask Scent is still working, I just think that we are coming across higher level creatures now which then increases the chance of it failing.
