The pet will do what it desires naturally, ranged at range.
You can spam a secondary attack or alternate between follow and attack.
I normally let the pet do its ranged thing as eventually mine tend to attack point blank.

I hate ranged pets when going for a tanker, that's why I tell bio engineers when I make a custom order to take ranged off, because when the pet fires from about 80 meters away, the creature will agro you instead.

i have a kimo 12k ham he knows strong poisen,strong disease also ranged attack when i tell him to do range on somone he does it but when they come melee range my kimo turns off range and attacks normaly and doing special attacks i tell him to do
