Working on another template for a second character which will include CH. Was wondering. . .Do any of you CHs have a preference as to your combat professions?
Do you prefer ranged(like Rifleman or Pistoleer) or do you like being right up front with your pets in melee(Pikeman, Fencer, for example).

Ranged or Melee

I am a melee type. But going ranged with CH profession is a more natural move I would think as your pets are primarily tanks.

You pretty much defeat the purpose of CH, IMO, if you melee with your pets, because the chances are high that the mob will aggro you instead - and your pets don't do damage at a good rate, so using your creatures as pure damage-dealers is pretty useless.
However, once you Master, you can teach your ranged attacking pets to use their ranged attacks all the time - basically reversing the situation, and tanking the mobs yourself while your pet tosses in an extra 500 damage every few seconds.
Myself, I'm a 0/0/2/0 Pistoleer at the moment.

I've decided to take the plunge into CH with my Pikeman, which I love as a profession. As far as what's better? Well, that's subjective. I don't think you defeat any purpose of a profession as long as you enjoy yourself, and understand it's strengths and weaknesses. That's just my $0.02. I've seen CHs that are TK, Fencers, Pikeman. I've seen CHs that are Marksmen, Riflemen, Pistoleers.
I'd say(and I'm the noob here)that there is no right or wrong way to play CH, just as long as you don't try to make it your primary. It's a complimentary profession. Your pets assist in combat. They are not meant to be your only means of fighting.

A little known secret about aggro in SWG -- it usually goes to whomever is closest.
NPCs using a blaster might stay on their original target unless they peace and let someone else attacking take aggro.
Once in melee, for creatures or NPCs, they attack whatever is closest. When moving server latency might make it look like this is not the case, but it is. If you can perform a posture change or use a trap to root the target, you can easily control who gains aggro.
Now with that covered, melee works quite well with pets if you pay attention. You have a range of 4 meters using base attacks, or 10 meters when using specials. Just make sure you keep behind the pet and they will always maintain aggro.

I was a master CH way back in the day when creatures had really nice stats, ever since the patch that nerfed them all , most have become much weaker. I gave up CH for the holo grind and now i'm back to master again. I have some tough pets with light armor and 60% kinetic or higher (some are bio eng). I only use pets for two scenario's.
1. As a temp tank. ie. Keeping a mob busy while i deal with a tougher mob.
2. Ranged help. While i tank the mob the pets can do their specials and use ranged attacks to help me.
I'm a master sword with some tka, so with 80% kinetic armor i don't really need a pet to tank for me, but really just back me up with some of the nice specials most rare pets have...
make no mistake pets are not dmg dealers, cept for the few very rare ones. Mostly just rely on their specials and ranged abilities. :P

I am pretty much same as you lammergeier. MBE/MCH/novice merchant.
It really is hard to kill something tough. My pets can tank pretty well, but cannot deal big enough damage to finish mobs quickly. I am thinking it may be a bit too hard for me to pursue the path of a jedi...
