Which skills to choose?

Postby compile » Wed Jul 14, 2004 7:41 am

I just started being a CH. I hope it turns out to be good, I read a lot of negative opinions about the profession, that it doesn't add much and such...

Anyway, my question is, which skill to choose next and after that?
I'm currently 0-0-1-1 and will probably be going on some hunting missions that will provide XP, like suggested here on Dantooine or something.

So what should I choose next? For example something that will raise the XP I obtain. Just not with taiming and training, because that takes ages. So maybe something to get 2 creatures out and let time fight side-by-side. But I've read both creatures get 50%, is this true? Then it doesn't matter if I'm fighting with two creatures or not.

Unfortunately thats true. The xp from each pet is halfed so the xp per kill is the average that the two pets would give for the kill, not the sum. When your killing things that really takes time to kill this might be a good path though as you would be bringing it down faster (which would in turn give you more xp over time).
But for killing low mobs that you instant kill with your own weapon directly after a hit your much better off using one pet.

Overall I think your best bet for xp is to do animal missions, then when you have 6k go to a bazaar terminal and look around for the best pet you can find to fight with. Now train this up on lower mobs, you should be killing them very fast and getting good xp. Killing the mob with your best weapon right after the pet hits it makes things much faster.

The training line is pretty good, it gives you a command per block as well as increases the number of pets you can store. Which helps for xp (a bit).
Taming isnt very good at the first block, but after that it makes you be able to train vicious creatures as well as training your fighting pets to use their abilities on command. Id suggest avoiding until you have a few other blocks. (At least dont take Taming until after you got Training I, you wont find much use to tame vicious creatures in the beginning anyways, there are cheapish BE'd pets to buy that beats what you could tame.)

IMO anyways

Being a CH is the most fun I've had playing SWG. I spend most of my gametime roaming planets looking for my next tame. I am a loner, well, me and my pets. I'm not interested in PvP or dueling people. I don't really care about getting uber armor or weapons. I don't even want uber pets. I just want to set my sights on a target and go after it. The satisfaction of spawning and taming a pet after hours of searching and tearing up lairs is very rewarding to me.

Whether or not you'll enjoy being a CH really comes down to what you want from your gameplay experience. CH doesn't add as much as many of the other professions, true, but you quickly learn what you can contribute. Sometimes sacrificing a pet to tank a troublesome mob can be invaluable.

We can train mounts which is fun, but not very necessary. I've given mounts to my circle of friends and a few strangers I've met along the way who have shown me kindness. I've never had anyone offer to buy a mount from me.

I've had people ask me to train their pets and I always offer to name their pets if they are nameless. It adds to the social viability of our craft. They ask how much they owe me and I tell them it's free of charge. Sometimes they bank tip me.

So yes, there are negative comments to be made about the Creature Handler profession. We gripe about stuff all the time. But in the end, for most of us, it is a labor of love. It is the personal challenge of setting and achieving our goals. It's the satisfaction of being able to think of a clever name (or a not so clever name) to give to our latest pet. It's looking in our datapads and thinking, \"Wow, I did all that!\"

If that's the type of stuff that you find rewarding, then you'll come to love the creature handler profession like many of us have done.

One tame at a time,
Zurl

(By the way, I went for 2/2/2/2 first, then trained taming to 4, training to 4, empathy to 4 and management last.)
